Each Scale Step Represents a Mode

Scale Degrees

Individually, a mode is a scale. Sometimes, a mode will have a formal name. However, with so many possible scales, most often they do not. And since there are so many scales, modes can be used to name scales without formal names. If a mode does not have a formal name, they can be named numerically using scale degrees, such as the Suspended Pentatonic 1, Suspended Pentatonic 2, and so on.
