It may be easier to understand modes if the scales are placed right next to each other. When research began on this book, many common scales were diagrammed using octave diagrams and cut out individually as if they were playing cards. Though many of the scales originally transcribed into octave diagrams were not modes of each other, through play, it did not take long to place these five together like pieces of a puzzle (above).
